Language Arts

Language is one of God’s greatest gifts.

Through words we know Him, delight in beautiful stories, communicate truth, preserve history, and pass wisdom from one generation to the next. At Redimere, we desire to cultivate students who love reading, think deeply, communicate clearly, and never stop learning.

The heart of Redimere is a shared story. Families journey through many of the same books and ideas together, creating meaningful conversations, lasting memories, and a common language that extends far beyond the school day.

A Shared Story

Our Language Arts Program

At the heart of Redimere is a shared story. Rather than dividing families across multiple books and grade-level texts, students journey through many of the same stories, ideas, and historical narratives together. Older students explore them more deeply while younger students delight in the story, creating meaningful conversations and lasting memories across the whole family.

Our Approach

Language is best learned by using it. Students spend their days immersed in rich literature, listening carefully, discussing ideas, narrating, summarizing, outlining, and writing with genuine purpose. Living books and quality trade books form the backbone of our language arts program, allowing children to encounter beautiful language in meaningful contexts across every subject.

At Redimere reading, grammar, spelling, and writing are woven throughout the entire curriculum rather than taught solely as isolated subjects. Students encounter beautiful and meaningful words every day through Scripture, history, science, nature, art, music, mathematics, and great literature. We also practice language skills together whenever possible, so a dictation exercise may strengthen spelling, grammar, punctuation, handwriting, attention, and careful listening all at once.

As students mature, they naturally progress from narration to summary, from summary to outlining, and from outlining to increasingly polished compositions. The goal is to become thoughtful readers, careful observers, joyful and competent communicators, and lifelong learners.

Cultivating a Culture of Readers

Reading & Literature

Read Alouds

We protect read-aloud time as a family because shared stories create shared memories. At home, families gather around books together, and much of our school curriculum is built around family read-alouds that give students a common narrative to explore across ages and stages.

At school, read-alouds abound in science, history, art, music, and even math. We value the contribution of trade books, picture books, biographies, poetry, and other beautifully written works that make ideas memorable and invite students into deeper learning.

Phonics Instruction

In the primary grades, students receive explicit, systematic phonics instruction, equipping them with the tools to confidently decode unfamiliar words. We believe confident readers are built through both rich literature and strong foundational skills.

Cozy Reading Time

After recess, students settle into a quiet, comfortable time of self-selected reading. Each student chooses their own quality literature to read and brings a book to school, gradually taking ownership of their reading life and beginning to see themselves as a reader. This daily practice gives students time to build stamina, follow their interests, and experience the simple joy of getting lost in a good book.

Reader's Theater

Students participate in Reader’s Theater throughout the year, reading and performing dramatic works together to develop fluency, expression, confidence, public speaking skills, and appreciation for literature and the dramatic arts.

Developing Competency & Mastery

Spelling

Students progress through our spelling curriculum according to mastery rather than strictly by grade level, allowing each child to build a strong foundation at an appropriate pace. In the elementary years, instruction emphasizes the most frequently used words in the English language while equipping students with a carefully sequenced set of phonograms and spelling rules that are reviewed regularly throughout their years at Redimere. These principles are reinforced daily through recitation, dictation, and authentic writing, helping students understand why words are spelled as they are rather than relying solely on memorization.

Beginning in the upper grades, spelling instruction transitions to the study of Latin and Greek roots, prefixes, and suffixes, enabling students to spell, understand, and infer the meanings of thousands of advanced English words.

Observing the Masters

Grammar & Writing

Sentence Study

Children learn grammar by studying real authors and carefully chosen passages from great literature. Each week, students discuss grammar, vocabulary, style, and technique before applying those ideas in their own writing.

Writer's Studio

Great writers are formed by imitation before innovation. Students observe how master authors craft sentences, organize ideas, and communicate clearly before practicing those same techniques in their own writing. Over time, they develop a confident voice that is uniquely their own.

Writing with Purpose

Writing is never an isolated subject. Students narrate, summarize, outline, journal, report, debate, and present throughout history, science, Bible, and literature. Grammar and technique is taught in context of real writing. Every writing assignment exists to deepen understanding, preserve learning, or communicate truth to others.

Beautiful Penmanship

Handwriting & Copywork

We believe handwriting is an art worth preserving. Students begin learning cursive in Kindergarten and continue developing fluency through guided instruction and copywork. Rather than racing to complete assignments, students write carefully, beautifully, and with attention to detail.

Daily copywork is drawn from our Scripture, poetry, and recitation booklet, allowing students to strengthen both penmanship and memory.

At Redimere, we desire to cultivate students who love reading, think deeply, communicate clearly, and never stop learning.
